Since 2004, over 1,000 companies in Tengjia Town, Shuitou, Wenzhou and Pingyang, have taken a new path through closure, mergers, and restructuring. This year, the number of tanneries in the two places will be reduced to around 10 companies.

According to Wu Fengmu, head of the Wenzhou Shuitou Tannery Base Management Committee, the company within the base is waiting for a new round of restructuring. The reorganization will continue to reduce the number of 39 companies that were closed, merged, and reorganized last time to about 6 according to the standard of 50 drums per company. Tengyi's tannery companies have completed a new round of restructuring in Shuitou recently. The last 11 companies after the reorganization were Pengchang and other three companies.

According to briefings, when the Wenzhou Shuitou tanning base flourished, more than 1,000 tannery companies rumbling drums and tens of thousands of people were busy in factories. In 2003, after Shuitou Tanning ranked the top ten cases of environmental violations in the country, relevant departments shut down and integrated more than 1,000 workshop-type enterprises into 464 companies, and subsequently continued to integrate 165 enterprises. In 2006, Shuitou Tanning Base Implementation of a comprehensive shutdown and rectification, 165 enterprises after the reorganization to 39, after the rectification of Shuitou in October 2007 successfully "cap". According to reports, after this year's restructuring, the tanning enterprises in the two places will be reduced to about 10, and Wu Fengmu said frankly that this is a painful but must-do choice. The tannery industry must “rebirth” through cutting arms and wrists, prompting practitioners to either transform or upgrade and get rid of the original development path at the expense of the environment.

It is understood that the old factory building of Wenzhou Shuitou Tanning Base will be completely downgraded to a newly-built standard factory building for the reorganized enterprise, and will be equipped with advanced sewage discharge facilities. This will save more than 1,000 mu of land for the construction of commercial, residential and other ancillary facilities. Enterprises entering the new base will have the conditions to produce high-quality products, and those who withdraw from the tanning industry may choose to enter related industries such as leather goods, leather goods and pet supplies to extend the leather industry chain.

The chairman of Zhejiang Pengchang Leather Co., Ltd., who has integrated four companies, has been planning future development. Lin Zuxi said that they will produce cow hides and leather, build a dust-free workshop and produce high-end products. The leather that originally sold only 20 yuan will be raised to 50 yuan and 100 yuan, and the output value in five years will reach 1 billion yuan.

Since 2006, Wenzhou Shuitou belts, leather goods, and pet supplies have surged from dozens of companies to more than 400, and most of them have been transformed from the original tanneries. These related industries in Wenzhou Shuitou Tannery now have an industrial park covering an area of ​​800 mu. The total annual production value has reached about 4 billion yuan, and it has become the pillar industry of Shuitou Town. Zhang Zhouli, the deputy mayor of the town, said that this shows that the restructuring of the tanning industry is on the right track and the prospects are very promising.
