The world’s first molecular engine with positive and negative rotation
Engineers dream of a single-molecule motor that can unlock molecular-level machine production. However, it is also extremely difficult to model a larger engine alone. Now researchers from France and Ohio State University have collaborated on a new project and created the first molecular engine that can rotate clockwise and counterclockwise. Christian Joachim, one of the lead authors of the project, said: "The creation of a molecular engine that can work must start from the ground up and forget the macro-scale engine."
This molecular engine is 1 nanometer high and 2 nanometer wide. The rotor contains five iron spokes, one of which is shorter than the others and is easily noticeable when rotating. This molecular engine uses a quantum mechanical process called inelastic electron tunneling, in which electrons that are directed at the molecule lose some of their energy during the transfer process, and the resulting vibrations turn the rotor. And their rotors can rotate even at minus 316 degrees Fahrenheit. A scanning tunneling microscope hovered over the molecular engine and tested its performance by stimulating different parts of the molecular engine.
Researchers have found that they can control its rotation by focusing energy on different parts of the microengine. For example, targeting each longer spoke will cause a counterclockwise rotation, while a shorter spoke will cause a clockwise rotation. Johim said: "This engine is a molecular concept whose goal is to improve our understanding of the single-molecule rotational drive." Researchers are now focusing on achieving two goals: First, connecting this engine to the nanoscale On the gear, the other is to install it on a nano-sized molecular car to provide it with energy.
