New enzyme preparation boosts corn ethanol production
On October 30th, Novozymes, the world's leading enzyme manufacturer, launched the new enzyme formulation Novozymes Avantec. The formulation is capable of increasing corn ethanol production by 2.5%, further increasing biofuel yields and benefits.
Peter Hawke Nelson, Executive Vice President of Novozymes, said Avantec can maximize the yield during the conversion process compared to other existing products on the market. Although the starch conversion rate of most ethanol companies in the United States has reached 90% to 95%, there is still room for improvement. For most US ethanol producers, the previous production of 100 million gallons of fuel ethanol, 300,000 tons of animal feed and 8,500 tons of corn oil, the plant needs to consume about 900,000 tons of feed grade corn. With Avantec, the production of the same amount of ethanol can consume as little as 22,500 tons of corn. If all US ethanol plants use Avantec, they will be able to save 3 million tons of corn raw materials for the United States.
The United States is the world's largest producer of biofuels, and its 2012 corn ethanol production is expected to be 13.3 billion gallons. Corn is currently the main raw material for biofuels in the United States, and the price of corn continues to rise, resulting in a very limited profit margin for ethanol producers.
Avantec is the latest development in Novozymes' portfolio of biofuels. In the past five years, Novozymes' continuous innovation in the field of enzyme technology has increased the starch conversion rate of the biofuel industry by 5%.
