Searching for "Otis" on the Internet is not difficult to find. Since October, there have been two accidents related to the Otis series of brands in Qixia District of Yantai City, Shandong Province and Jingcheng Community of Nancheng City, Dongguan City, Guangdong Province.
Otis has frequent accidents in China. Is it a natural disaster or a man-made disaster? Is it accidental or inevitable?
According to the preliminary judgment of the relevant departments of Beijing, the culprit of the Beijing subway elevator accident may be the same as the Shenzhen subway elevator accident, coming from an important component, the bolt. Otis parts suppliers told the Daily Economic News (microblogging) reporter that Otis has changed the way materials are purchased in recent years. "Otis began to take cheap routes in the past two years, because the production of cheap elevators can be small profits but quick turnover, but the problems are slowly becoming prominent."

Multiple accident problems are present in the bolt
After the accident in the Beijing subway, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Quality Supervision said on July 6 that it was initially determined that the direct cause of the escalator failure was the damage of the fixed parts, the displacement of the escalator drive mainframe, and the drive chain falling off, causing the escalator to slide down. The next day, the Beijing Municipal Government Information Office reported that the escalator accident of the Beijing Subway was similar to the escalator accident that occurred in the Shenzhen Metro in December last year. The escalators in the two accidents were all Otis's 513 MPE escalators.
Last year, at the Guomao Station of Shenzhen Metro Line 1, an ascending Otis escalator also appeared retrograde, injuring 25 people. The cause of the accident is also that the fixed support bolt of the escalator drive main body is loose, and one bolt breaks, causing the main bearing to shift, causing the drive chain to disengage from the sprocket and the ascending escalator to slide down.
It can be seen that the above two accidents are related to the parts. However, the supplier of the Otis elevator bolts comes from a supplier. Although some netizens continue to expose the materials, there is still no certainty.
The reporter of "Daily Economic News" contacted Huayang (a pseudonym), a former employee of the German Würth company, who was the Otis elevator screw supplier. Huayang revealed that after May this year, Otis did not take the goods from Würth, but the specific reason is not very clear, it may be to find a cheaper, more cost-effective source.
“Elevator quality has a lot to do with parts. The quality of listed companies in China is ok, and the level is high-intensity. Many formal enterprises and large enterprises use these. But many domestic small-sized enterprises have 12.9 parts. The level is not up to date, it is also circulating in the market, and the parts are broken, it is very easy to accident," Huayang said.
The quality of the bolts also attracted the attention of Peng Jinsheng, director of the Beijing Elevator Chamber of Commerce. After the Beijing subway accident, he told the media that the strength of the bolt should be re-calculated, the strength is not enough, the fastening is not good, and the vibration of the motor work easily causes the bolt to loosen and break. If the re-calculation, there is no problem with the bolt strength, then the quality of the bolt may be problematic, and the inferior bolts are purchased for use on the escalator.
Procurement department is accused of not being strict
Recently, the reporter of "Daily Economic News" called Li Mingjie, manager of the public affairs department of Otis Elevator (China) Co., Ltd., to inquire about the source of bolts, but she did not disclose it. It only said that the final investigation result of the Beijing subway accident will be The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Quality Supervision is responsible for the announcement. "We have been cooperating with the investigation. The elevator accident caused by bolts last time was only the preliminary investigation result. Li Mingjie also said that the spare parts used by Otis elevators exist in both self-production and outsourcing. Generally speaking, the key components of the elevator are purchased by the manufacturer, and other spare parts are purchased. As for whether the bolts of the elevator were supplied by Würth, Li Mingjie said that he did not know.
Jiang Ming, a manufacturer of micro-screws, also said: "Although the bolts are products supplied by the suppliers, but the products purchased by the manufacturers are not inspected? The elevator parts are designed by the elevator company, sent to the supplier, and then tailored. If the product is unqualified, the demand side should not accept the goods. Supplier: Cheap route to trouble
Liu Li (a pseudonym), a supplier of Guangzhou Otis Elevator Company, is saddened by Otis’s mistake.
"Otis began to take a cheap route in the past two years, because the production of cheap elevators can be small profits but quick turnover, but its problems are slowly emerging." Liu Li believes.
“Take escalator trusses, for example, before 2009, they were all imported materials purchased by Otis, and then sent to suppliers for production. The square tube material is divided into many grades, and the two grades are lowered, and the material and strength are reduced. The purchasing department will give us the drawings, what new products are Otis drawings and technology, we will finish. Otis is generally no rebates. The risk of taking this rebate will be great. Otis has its own constraints. There are investigation departments. The buyers are all changed every two years and will not let you and the supplier contact for a long time." Liu Li said.
Parts procurement process is more greasy
Liu Li also felt the same when he was tired of the purchasing department and the supplier.
Liu Li revealed that a buyer who had worked in an elevator company for 8 years bought two suites in one place, one of which was worth 3 million yuan. However, the Purchasing Department does not have the money for everyone, because not every part of the elevator has a lot of profit, such as fasteners (screws, nuts, etc.), and those who purchase these fasteners may not have much profit. However, the truss, main drive and other accessories are very profitable. There are thousands of parts in one elevator. The purchasing department manages these suppliers with more than a dozen people. One person and more than a dozen suppliers will give gifts on holidays. For example, in the Mid-Autumn Festival, each supplier gives 10,000 yuan to the buyer, and more than a dozen to more than ten thousand yuan. This is still an ordinary "market" in the industry.
