New ways for Canadian researchers to make metal films cheaper than you can think of
Researchers at the University of British Columbia in Canada have discovered a new way to make high-tech materials, and the equipment used can be purchased at a local hardware store. The discovery could be applied in many areas, from hydrogen production to the development of flexible consumer electronics.
The technology uses a simple heating lamp that costs only about $10 to form a thin conductive metal coating on top of glass, plastic, metal, and more. Curtis Berggate, a professor of chemistry at the University of British Columbia, says this will be a very cheap and easy way to make important materials. Scientists had expected this "unorthodox" method to be effective only for certain substances, but the results were surprisingly found to be effective for almost every test metal.
Earlier technologies required not only expensive chemicals and energy-generating UV lamps, but even clean spaces without dust and other contaminants. The new process only needs to explode the metal salt in a short time with a heat lamp. Researchers say it's hard to estimate how cheap this new method is, but at least an order of magnitude cheaper.
In addition to cost, another advantage of this technology is that a conductive coating can be formed thereon without melting the plastic underlayer, which means that it can be used in fields such as smart textiles and flexible smartphones. Researchers hope that the discovery will lead to more efficient methods of electrolytic hydrogen production, or to so-called electrochromic windows, which can become darker or more opaque when voltage is applied.
The researchers believe that the method is suitable for large-scale manufacturing and intends to apply for a patent for this discovery. However, the new method is still inferior to the old method in some applications, and there are still many problems that need to be solved including the optimal temperature range of the heat lamp and the unique performance of the coating.
