Mercedes-Benz executives pointed out that the decision to get involved in the home battery market is not a direct response to Tesla's recent announcement. Mercedes-Benz outsources lithium-ion battery packs for hybrid and electric vehicles to its wholly-owned subsidiary Accumotive. The Mercedes-Benz home battery works in a similar way to Tesla's products: it is mounted on the wall, charging the battery pack during periods of low electricity consumption that are cheap, and is turned on during peak hours of high electricity usage.
