Massachusetts Institute of Technology develops miniature thrusters

MIT is currently designing a miniature booster that can propel small-size rockets into orbit and more distant space. The director of the Space Propulsion Laboratory at MIT believes that this type of micro-propellor can significantly reduce space mission execution costs compared to traditional spacecraft technology.

The micro-propeller can be mounted on a small satellite. After the voltage is applied, the liquid propellant in the propeller emits the ion current through the micro-nozzle. These charged particles can drive the satellite forward. Under this solar ion-jet propulsion system, four thrusters can provide ordinary small satellites with different position control and main driving force.

Under such technology, other tasks that may be accomplished include clearing up large amounts of orbital debris around the Earth and clearing it out of orbit when the satellite's life ends. Researchers in other countries are also studying such miniature propulsion technology for small satellites. Swiss scientists have said that they can use a few drops of fuel to propel a shoe box-sized satellite to the moon within six months.
