EU imposes huge antitrust fines on Saint-Gobain

Xinhua News Agency reported on November 9 that the European Commission imposed a fine of 799 million euros on 11 airlines around the world on the 9th to punish their monopoly in the cargo business to form illegal cartels and control fuel surcharges.

The 11 airlines include British Airways, French Airways, Air Canada, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines and more. Although Lufthansa participated in the illegal cartel, it was exempted from punishment because the company was first reported to the European Commission.

The European Commission said that the 12 airlines adopted a secret agreement between December 1999 and February 2006 to take coordinated action to collect fuel and safety surcharges for air cargo, in violation of EU anti-monopoly regulations.

Among them, the French KLM Group was the most severely penalized, paying a fine of 340 million euros; British Airways was followed by a fine of 104 million euros.

In order to maintain fair competition, the EU's anti-monopoly law enforcement is quite strict. In November 2008, four auto glass producers, including Saint-Gobain of France, were fined 1.39 billion euros by the European Commission for controlling the market. This is the largest “penalty” issued by the European Union so far.
