Shanghai Jiaotong University's current 2009 students are sweating during the summer heat of the training ground. The six-member small team led by 11-member instructor Le Jinwei successfully designed solar air-conditioning garments.

Solar air-conditioning clothing is a single cooling device that can be placed on the back belt. It can pull up the wind from the waist and discharge it from the back neckline. Due to its petite appearance, the students were vividly called the "BP" machine.

According to teacher Le Jinwei, principal of the invention team, the invention has three main features:

This design makes full use of clean energy and avoids the environmental pollution and waste of resources caused by the use of ordinary batteries.

The second is to change the direction of the wind. The team used vertical wind guidance technology to convert winds drawn on the 10cm x 11cm side plane to 90° inside the machine and finally out of a flat 10cm x 1.5cm exhaust outlet. This will not only ensure the area of ​​the wind, but also ensure the width of the exhaust surface, so that the back can maximize the wind.

Finally, like the “BP” machine, the main characteristic of solar air-conditioning garments is its portability and aesthetics. It houses a plurality of buckles, which is convenient to wear on the clothes; it is small in size, easy to carry and has no weight burden.

As early as June, this idea began to be brewed in the hearts of Le Jinwei teachers and the team of 6 students. The mobile school Yang Yaoxian’s classmate was bitten by a mosquito, and there was a large swollen back on the back. After being diagnosed by a doctor as dermatitis, the perspiration was difficult. Two students, Sun Wei and Yan Hengzhi, learned that after Yang Yaoxian’s illness with his students, he tried to help him cool down and reduce inflammation. After discussion, Sun Wei whimper and suggested that if the fan can be fixed on the back and accelerate the circulation of air circulation on the back, it can help the rapid evaporation of sweat, to achieve the purpose of auxiliary perspiration and reduce skin temperature. This coincides with the design of air-conditioned clothes that Mr. Le Jinwei had previously conceived. A temporary invention team is thus formed.

A week before the military training, several team members had already returned to school in advance to work together for research and development.

The process of invention was not smooth and the team members had encountered many difficulties.

In the face of massive information on the Internet, team members need to spend a lot of time and energy screening and confirmation, and finally get the required quality information. They learned that Japan's products in this area are very expensive, require nearly US$100, and are inconvenient to use. The United States also has cooling vests similar to the “human ventilation system”, but it is inconvenient to wear, high in cost, and unusable. For this reason, the team members integrated the concept of good quality and portable with the design.

From the brick-type air-conditioner garments that wind 180° horizontally, to the A4 paper-sized large-scale air-conditioner garments that require air vents on clothes, and finally to the vertically-guided portable solar-powered air-conditioner garments, the team has come a long way.

Expo volunteers will wear air-conditioning clothes

Sun Wei, who is about to enter the Expo site and become a volunteer, has even more different feelings. After entering the park in advance to become familiar with the environment, he deeply felt that the volunteers worked hard for tourists under the hot sun and hoped to use the solar air-conditioner clothes for volunteers. This is not only a good publicity for the use of clean energy, but also responds to the call for low carbon and energy saving at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

The teachers and students of Jiaotong University believe that the application prospect of air-conditioner clothing is very wide. Its current function in military training is to provide convenient services to military students participating in outdoor activities. “Solar Air-Conditioning Clothing” can also bring a cool summer to outdoor workers, such as traffic police on duty on the highway and other outdoor workers. They insisted on the service in the hot sun. They needed a miniature fan device that was compact, easy to wear, and able to last a long time.
