Scientists develop indoor solar cells: a conversion rate of 400 lux down to 22.

It may sound ridiculous to place solar cells indoors, but it should be noted that a large amount of light energy is wasted in the indoor environment. Recently, a team of engineers claimed to have developed a flexible peroxide solar cell, which can effectively convert indoor solar energy into electrical energy.

In homes, shops, offices and other buildings, indoor lighting is generally between 100 and 500 lux. The brightness of outdoor sunlight is usually around 110,000 lux. Although there is a big difference between indoor lighting and outdoor sunlight, it is still sufficient for use.

A scientific research team consisting of the University of Rome, Dulwich University, Universidad Surcolombiana, and the Fraunhofer Institute deposited ultra-thin, flexible indium tin oxide (ITO) on glass substrates. The end result is that the photovoltaic cell is flexible, has high strength, and can harvest light at indoor brightness.

In tests under LED lighting, it was found that the efficiency of this battery at 200 lux was 20.6%, and the efficiency at 400 lux was 22.6%. The team stated that this is the most efficient of all flexible and flexible indoor photovoltaic technologies.

The power density of the new design is relatively low, but this is expected in indoor batteries. In this case, the density below 200 lux is 16.7 microwatts per square centimeter, while 400 lux is as high as 35 microwatts. This means that these batteries will not run anything that consumes too much power, but they may be useful for small sensors or IoT devices.

The researchers also said that this manufacturing method is easy to scale, so mass production of these flexible solar cells should be relatively cheap. The research was published in the journal "Cell Reports Physical Science".
