Roughing 3D cavity with acute angle
An acute angle sidewall of less than 90 degrees is a common cavity characteristic. Depending on the stability of the machine, directional milling with CoroMill ® Plura ball end mills or a custom-designed CoroMill ® 390 milling cutter is a good choice.
Finishing 3D cavities with acute angles
Four-axis or five-axis machines are required to machine sharp-angle sidewalls. If the cavity has only one side wall with an acute angle and the bottom is flat, four axes are sufficient; however, if the cavity has an acute angle on both sides and a circular transition at the intersection with the bottom, a five-axis machine tool must be used.
At this point, a very good surface quality can be achieved with a taper ball end mill.
