China's energy industry is in urgent need

The tremendous changes that have occurred in the energy industry must arouse our attention and in-depth reflection. If knowledge still persists in the past, we will not be able to keep up with the pace of development of the times and become a laggard, not a changemaker.

When mankind enters the 21st century, the world has changed dramatically in the whistling sound.

In particular, the dramatic changes in the energy sector are dazzling. Low-carbon energy, sustainable energy, energy and the environment, energy self-sufficiency, and energy security are all topics that people talk about every day.

In general, the pattern and structure of the world's energy are changing or being changed. The change itself is not only a change in the object of energy exploitation, use patterns, and technical ideas, but also some changes in the rules of the game. These profound changes have unknowingly affected all aspects of oil and gas exploration and development. Their nature is self-evident and fundamental.

Taking oil and natural gas exploration as an example, from the perspective of exploration and development theory, the initial theoretical understanding is usually to find the structure, that is, to construct a hydrocarbon reservoir. Finding the structure is equivalent to finding oil and gas. This pure "structural trap" was initially considered by explorers and textbooks as classics. Later, the objects of exploration and development were historically replaced by lithologic reservoirs. Such reservoirs are generally "lithological traps" or "residual zone" barriers and are very different from structural reservoirs. For this reason, people call this change a big leap in the understanding of oil and gas exploration and development.

In recent years, major changes have taken place in oil and gas exploration and development, and people have begun to realize the significance of finding unconventional and continuous oil and gas reservoirs. Such oil and gas reservoirs are generally "not trapped" or "traps are not obvious." What is important is that such oil and gas reservoirs have huge resources, and they have achieved success in the United States and China (in some aspects). This is undoubtedly a ** in the history of oil and gas exploration and development.

About 6 years ago, few people in the oil exploration and development community in China knew that “oil and gas can be produced in shale and the gas production is considerable”. This is because the theory of early exploration and development only considered that “the shale is a source of oil and gas.” Now it is both a “oil and gas reservoir” and a “reservoir reservoir,” and oil and gas can be produced. In September of this year, at the "Global Shale Gas Promotion Conference" held in Washington, the United States announced that its 2009 shale gas production was 88.9 billion cubic meters, which exceeded China's conventional gas production of 83 billion cubic meters. This incredible change has, in a sense, changed the traditional way of thinking and methods for finding oil and gas. In fact, in the year before last year, some people in China jointly proposed to pay attention to shale gas exploration and development to the relevant departments, but they only started substantive work in the field of shale gas since last year, and the development momentum is good.

In addition, people talked about the project of coal-to-oil making, which had been studied by the state before World War II, but it has been truly successful in China today. China's Shenhua Group successfully trial production in Ordos, with an annual output of 2 million tons, is said to cost 40 US dollars a barrel. Although the cost is high, however, coal-to-oil has been successful and it has succeeded in being discussed and questioned. Under the circumstances of China's economic development and demand for energy, I believe that all forms of energy should provide active support as long as they are conducive to the country’s fundamental interests and do not fundamentally damage the environment.

Compared with China, the global oil and gas exploration and development field has changed as early as ten years ago, and exploration targets are deepwater, polar, unconventional oil and gas, and old oilfields to improve oil recovery. Here only talk about the problem of improving oil recovery in old oilfields. As early as more than 20 years ago, the United States and international oil companies made a fuss about the improvement of oil recovery in the old oilfields. Their strategic idea is to make “old oil fields rejuvenate”. The specific technical idea is to use “carbon dioxide flooding” and the effect is very clear. , increase recovery of 12% to 30%. They describe this practice as "changes in the rules of the game." They believe that “primary, secondary, and tertiary oil recovery are the last resort,” and current technology can enable the newly discovered oil recovery to reach the “level achieved by the first, second, and third oil recovery” at a time, from the recovery factor. From an angle, the old oilfield is the same as the new oilfield. The old oilfields promoted by CNPC are the second line of development for the old oilfields.

Some practices of international companies are worth learning from, such as "do not pay attention to the so-called proved reserves," but focus on "technically recoverable reserves" and "economically recoverable reserves." The so-called "technically recoverable reserves" refers to reserves that mature technologies can exploit, while economically recoverable reserves are linked to oil prices, and the high oil prices are highly economically recoverable. vice versa. This approach is reasonable and realistic. In addition, they calculate reserves, and the selection of parameters is very characteristic. For example, they do not talk about "effective thickness," but focus on "reservoir thickness," and the final result of this choice of reserves is quite different. Although our country does not necessarily copy their practices, it is worth our consideration.

The tremendous changes that currently occur in the energy industry must arouse our attention and reflection. If our understanding still persists in the past, we will not be able to keep up with the pace of development of the times, or we will be a laggard, not a changer.
