Scientists have developed solar-powered flapping wings

According to foreign media reports, one of the challenges of designing a micro aircraft (MAV) lies in the fact that if their batteries are large enough to support the required cruising range, they may not be portable. However, scientists have developed an alternative, that is, flapping wings powered by the sun.

The "Flexible Biological Butterfly Wing" (FBBW), created by a team of Chinese scientists, is made of a thin polymer sheet and is coated with a nanocrystalline metal film on top. The prototype device is placed horizontally, one end is fixed on a fixed bracket, and the other end can move freely.

When simulated sunlight hits the FBBW, the temperature of the two materials rises, causing them to expand. However, because the underlying FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) polymer swells more than the top metal film, the flapping wings respond by curling inward and upward. Once fully curled, the curved top will cover the rest of the FBBW, allowing it to cool and flatten out. In this way, the device will curl up and down quickly and repeatedly, resulting in a flapping motion that is faster than the actual butterfly wings.

In the demonstration of the system, the researchers built a photodynamic rotating gyroscope, a toy sailboat that moves on the water by waving sails, and a device that generates electricity by flapping the wings. Although no flying micro-robot equipped with FBBW has been manufactured so far, this is indeed one of the possible uses of the technology in the future.
