Japanese researchers recently discovered that hydrogen borohydride nanosheets can release hydrogen through light at room temperature and pressure. The researchers said that this material is expected to be used as a more lightweight and safe hydrogen carrier material. So far, transportation of hydrogen, a gas with an explosion risk, requires high temperature and high pressure. For example, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are equipped with high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks.
Researchers from institutions such as Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tsukuba University in Japan published a report in the new issue of the British "Nature-Communications" magazine. They found that hydrogen borohydride nanosheets with a 1: 1 composition ratio of boron and hydrogen were exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Hydrogen can be released in large amounts, even under normal temperature and pressure through light. The researchers said that the hydrogen boride nanosheets are very convenient to operate and are expected to be used as highly efficient hydrogen carrier materials.
The researchers analyzed that the hydrogen boride nanosheets can store and release hydrogen in large quantities, one is related to its two-dimensional structure, and the other is related to its unique electronic energy band structure.
In September 2017, the research team successfully synthesized hydrogen boron thin films for the first time. As a high-quality density hydrogen storage material, hydrogen borohydride film is expected to be used as a light and safe hydrogen carrier material to replace the high-pressure hydrogen storage tank with explosion risk.
