Hardware Encyclopedia|The higher the level of the bolt, the lower the stretching ability?

Myth: The higher the level of the bolt, the lower the stretchability.

Truth: Regardless of the level, as long as the bolts are of the same material, the modulus of elasticity E is the same:

– Carbon steel bolts (ISO898-1): E=210kN/mm2.

– Stainless steel bolts (ISO3506-1): E=170kN/mm2.

According to Hooke's law, the tensile strength of a material depends on the modulus E, and the relationship between stress σ and strain ε is: σ = E 5 ε. Therefore, the bolts of the same size have the same strain under the same stress, and the grade is higher. The difference is that high-grade bolts can withstand larger loads before yielding or breaking.
