As we all know, we can use gaseous fossil fuels such as natural gas to generate electricity. However, German researchers have turned “inverted†and invented an “electricity conversion†method that aims to solve the problem of excess energy generated by renewable energy such as wind and solar energy in a short period of time. Difficulty in storing electricity.
The Fraunhofer Society of Germany issued a communique on April 26 saying that currently global wind power and solar power generation are increasing, but how to effectively store and comprehensively use these green power is a technical problem that people are still trying to solve.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy Systems Technology and the Baph State Solar and Hydrogen Research Center in Germany have collaborated to develop a new idea for electricity storage: firstly using short-term “excess†wind or solar electricity to electrolyze water into hydrogen and oxygen. Then, the generated hydrogen reacts with carbon dioxide to produce methane. This process is actually the use of "surplus" electricity to synthesize natural gas. These natural gas can be easily imported into existing natural gas infrastructure and utilized comprehensively.
At present, a demonstration facility established by researchers in Stuttgart has begun to operate effectively, and the energy conversion rate of electricity conversion has exceeded 60%. German research institutions are working with an Austrian solar company to advance the industrialization of this technology.
