A research is expected to achieve a new type of flexible intelligent color-changing battery

The reporter learned from Xi'an Jiaotong University on the 14th that the research team of Professor He Gang of the School's Frontier Institute of Science and Technology successfully prepared the chalcogen element-containing viologen polymer and applied it as an electrode material to organic radical lithium-ion batteries. The research results were published in the "Applied Chemistry" in Germany recently.

Viologen compound is a cationic organic molecule with excellent redox properties. Under the application of voltage or light conditions, it can undergo two-step reversible single-electron redox to generate free radical positive ion state and neutral molecular state, accompanied by obvious color changes. Its unique redox characteristics make it widely used in the field of energy storage materials, such as inorganic / organic lithium / sodium / magnesium ion batteries, water-based organic flow batteries, organic radical batteries, and lithium-oxygen batteries.

As a new type of energy storage device, organic free radical batteries have the advantages of no rare metals, adjustable redox properties, and flexible design at the molecular level. However, these batteries also have few redox states, low capacity, and stability. Defects such as poor sex greatly limit its application.

The relevant mechanism research of the team of Professor He Gang of Xi'an Jiaotong University shows that with the introduction of tellurium atoms, the conductivity of the electrode material is greatly improved and the lithiation sites are increased. On this basis, they combined the electrochromic properties of the tellurium-containing violet polymer with battery applications to prepare a new type of flexible color-changing battery. During the battery's charging and discharging process, there is a clear color Variety.

This research work not only develops a new type of organic free radical battery, but also provides new ideas for the research in the field of color-changing batteries. Violet compounds containing chalcogen elements can be applied to organic free radical lithium ion batteries. Greatly improve the performance of free radical batteries, and can also combine the color-changing properties of such molecules with battery performance to develop new organic color-changing batteries.
